FIU has a tradition of hosting the U.S. Department of Education TRIO programs designed to support the academic success of first-generation students. We have hosted TRIO programs since 1992. Our programs include:
- Upward Bound
- Student Support Services
- Upward Bound Math-Science
- Educational Talent Search
- Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program
These programs contribute to FIU being one of the largest producers of bachelor’s degrees of historically underrepresented students, including first-generation.
Student Support Services
Program provides opportunities for academic development, assistance with basic college requirements, and motivates students toward the successful completion of their bachelor degree. The goal of SSSP is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants. SSSP also may provide grant aid to current participants who are receiving Federal Pell Grant.

Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program
The McNair Scholars Program is a federally-funded TRIO access program, designed to prepare students from low-income and first-generation for graduate education as defined by the U.S. Department of Education. McNair Scholars participate in courses, seminars, and workshops on topics related to graduate school preparation, complete a paid research experience under the guidance of a faculty mentor, and have the opportunity to present their research at local, regional, or national conferences. The McNair program staff works closely with students as they complete their undergraduate requirements and graduate school applications.
