First Generation at FIU
Florida International University is a designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) with a minority student enrollment of 83%. More than half of our undergraduate students qualify for Pell grants and are the first in their families to graduate from college. We are committed and grounded in the theory of developing a culminating mass of promising, talented and diverse pool of underserved minority students that succeed in higher education.
- As South Florida’s first urban public research university, FIU is the university of access for the region’s six million residents and is a solutions center for addressing global needs.
Since opening for classes in 1972 with the largest first-day enrollment in American collegiate history, FIU has distinguished itself as one of the nation’s largest, most diverse institutions of higher education. - Since 2006, the First Generation Scholarship has been awarded to students who are first in their family to obtain their degree. This is a need-based scholarship funded by public and private dollars to undergraduate students who attend Florida public, state universities. FIU has awarded critical financial support to over 10,000 students through the First Generation Scholarship Program. These scholarships do not just offer financial support, but can also offer unique networking opportunities with successful professionals.
- Student Support Services (TRIO) is a Federal Grant sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The Federal TRIO Programs are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. At FIU we have the following additional TRIO programs: Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement, Talent Search, Upward Bound, and Upward Bound Math-Science.
